Content marketing is hard.

It’s difficult enough finding the time to write content without then suffering from the added pain of writer’s block.

Coming up with fresh blog ideas or social media posts is an exhausting process, and sooner or later it will feel like your juices have run dry.

Unfortunately, consistency is key if you want your small business’ marketing efforts to be successful. Posting fresh content regularly helps keep your customers engaged and coming back for more. As such, twiddling your thumbs and waiting for inspiration to strike isn’t an option.

However, there are several tricks you can use to help generate ideas when creative fatigue has set in.

Get inspired by your customers

One of the most common mistakes people make is to try and come up with content ideas all by themselves. Rather, look to your customers and cover a topic that they want to know more about. Go through your sent mail folder to see what your customers ask time and again. The internet is also a goldmine of inspiration. Search Reddit, Quora and other forums for your topic, and see what questions people have asked.

Get inspired by your competitors

Another great tactic is to get inspired by what your competitors are doing. Have a look at their website or blog, and see what they’ve written about. The idea here isn’t to plagiarise their content, but to see if you can approach the same topics from a fresh angle.

Get personal

Successful content marketing is all about authenticity. One of the easiest ways to build a genuine connection with your audience is by getting personal. Tell a story about yourself, or something that happened to you (good or bad).

This has the added benefit of helping your customers feel like they know the person behind your small business.
