A large following on social media is sometimes seen as the holy grail of content marketing. The more followers, the more impressive a brand is perceived to be. Some small businesses may be tempted to resort to unethical means to inflate their numbers by buying fake followers. This is a risky move that can backfire badly.

Why you shouldn’t buy followers on social media

Buying followers may be a quick fix but it doesn’t benefit your brand in the long run. It may actually do more harm.

You’re paying for numbers not active followers

When you buy followers on social media you’re only paying for numbers. These followers are often fake accounts or bots. One report found that Twitter had nearly 50 million fake accounts, many of which were sold to users looking to gain more followers.

Look beyond numbers. Fake followers and bots do nothing for your brand. It’s actually better to have a small but highly engaged following who are interested in your product or service. Do your content marketing the right way and real followers will grow organically.

Buying followers distorts your metrics

If your social media accounts are littered with fake followers, it will inevitably skew your metrics. Bots leave irrelevant or spam comments. The rest don’t engage at all. So how can you get an accurate indication of whether your content is hitting the mark?

Harms your reputation

If your real audience discovers that half your social media following is fake, there goes your reputation. Trust takes a long time to build but can be destroyed in seconds. Not to mention the public backlash you’ll receive from followers who feel duped.

What you should do instead

Now that you know what not to do, let’s look at ways to grow followers the right way.

Be consistent and patient

Social media marketing is a long game. It requires time, consistency and patience. Shortcuts just don’t work. You need a well-thought out content marketing plan and the dedication to produce content regularly.

Create good quality content

Be discerning with the type of content you publish. Poor quality content won’t yield much results as most people ignore trivial content. Quality over quantity is a better approach. High-quality content attracts more followers and increases engagement.
