It seems tempting to do everything in-house. After all, it’s not only cheaper, but you can control the quality.

However, this is a temptation that small businesses should resist.

After all, no one is good at everything. And no one has time to do everything.

Outsourcing some tasks seems like a no-brainer – things like postage, legal services and commercial printing.

But what other things should be outsourced?

The answer is: tasks you’re not very good at and/or tasks you don’t have time to do.

The good news is, your outsourcing partner should be very good at those tasks, and should have time to do them.

Funnily enough, in some circumstances, they might even be able to do them cheaper than you too, because they won’t waste resources trying to figure out how to do the job.

What can your small business outsource?

  • Content marketing
  • Content creation
  • Social media management
  • Web development
  • Graphic design
  • Research
  • Data entry and database building
  • Accounting
  • Customer service

Of course, while outsourcing has positives, it is not without its negatives. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros of outsourcing

  • You and your team will have more time to focus on core business
  • Your small business won’t need as many staff
  • You will be able to tap into other people’s skills
  • Work will become simpler and more enjoyable

Cons of outsourcing

  • It costs money
  • You lose control over the work
  • You may struggle to properly brief your outsourcing partner about the job and your small business
  • You might become frustrated about your outsourcing partner’s turnaround times

Your small business should outsource some things, and should do some things in-house.

Take time to work out which tasks should fall into which category.

For example, you might be able to create a basic website or design your own logo, but the difference in quality between doing it yourself and hiring a professional agency can be significant.
